VoIP Devices & How You Can Connect

VoIP is incredibly flexible, allowing your team to connect from anywhere, on any device.

  • Twisted-Pair Cable: Two insulated copper wires twisted together to reduce interference. Common in telephone and older Ethernet networks.

  • Coaxial Cable: A central copper wire surrounded by an insulator and a metallic shield. Used for cable TV and some internet connections.

  • Fiber Optic Cable: Thin glass or plastic strands that transmit data as light pulses. They offer very high speeds and are the backbone of modern networks.

    • Radio Communication: Uses radio waves for broadcasting audio to a wide audience.

    • Cellular Networks: Divide a geographical area into "cells" with a base station (cell tower) in each to connect mobile devices. This is the foundation for mobile voice and data services (e.g., 4G, 5G).

    • All telecommunication systems follow a three-step process:

      1. Transmission: A transmitter takes information (like sound or data) and converts it into a transmittable electronic signal. This often involves modulation, where the information is layered onto a carrier signal, making it suitable for travel.

      2. Propagation: The signal travels from the transmitter to the receiver through a transmission medium. This medium can be a physical cable (like a fiber optic cable) or a wireless channel (like the air).

      3. Reception: A receiver intercepts the signal and converts it back to its original form. This process, called demodulation, extracts the information from the carrier signal, allowing it to be used (e.g., heard as a voice or displayed as a video).
